MY VIEW - ALARM's 2020 vision

Monday 20 January 2020

As we all settle back into work after a well-deserved festive break and plan for the year ahead, we have been planning our 2020 vision here at ALARM.

At the December Board meeting we agreed which objectives from our business plan to prioritise for 2020. Our focus for this year will be to:

  • Improve and enhance our digital event offering
  • Increase membership engagement
  • Modernise ALARM’s governance arrangements
  • Support membership development.

You may wonder what this means from a member perspective. Our aim is to:

  • Deliver more webinars on relevant issues and sector specific topics
  • Produce more regular, topical guidance documents
  • Increase website content
  • Increase training opportunities.

To support our ambitious plans for 2020, we have introduced the use of quarterly themes across events, publications and the website. These are:

  • Climate change
  • Future technologies
  • Changing ways of working
  • Extreme events.

We are creating new focus groups to help achieve our objectives. We are now looking for members to get involved in planning training, increasing membership engagement and developing publications. This is a great opportunity for you to gain a deeper understanding of ALARM, and provides excellent CPD. If you are interested, please get in touch with the ALARM Office.

Following the success of our Back to basics - risk management course and insurance guide, we our developing this offering with the introduction of an advanced course and a procurement guide.

Our calendar of events for the first quarter of 2020 delivered by ALARM’s network of branches and sectors is now available on our website here, so why not take a look and put the dates in your diary. The events are always informative and interesting and provide excellent networking opportunities with like-minded professionals.

The ALARM Conference, Exhibition and Risk Awards return to Manchester on 21 to 23 June. With the continuous rise of new technologies and emerging futuristic

risks, this year’s Conference theme is The future is now. With sessions on wide-ranging topics including digital innovation, LGBT teaching in schools, climate change challenges, social media claims and sustainable and alternative energy sources, there is bound to be something that piques your interest.

The Risk Awards are a great opportunity to showcase the fantastic work undertaken by your teams and organisations and are FREE to enter. Entries open on Monday 20 January, so get your thinking caps on and review your work over the last year, in preparation for your entry. The winners will be announced at our annual Risk Awards dinner, where we will step back in time to the roaring twenties, a decade of social dynamism and glamour. Returning to The Principal Manchester on Monday 22 June, the Risk Awards dinner will be a Gatsby-esque soiree, fully embracing the art deco and flapper style the twenties is famous for.

I look forward to continue working with you all and seeing what this new decade will bring.
