Webinar Wednesday – There’s something in the air

Wednesday 24 February 2021

Following the inquest into the death of Ella Kissi-Debrah, who died following an asthma attack, a coroner recorded air pollution as a contributory factor to the death. This is the first time such a recording has been made in the UK.

The conclusion comes at a time when deaths from asthma attacks are the highest they have been in the last decade and have increased by more than 33% over the last ten years. When coupled with recent research that has found that that pollution levels now equal or exceed pre-COVID-19 levels in 80% of the 49 cities and large towns that were analysed, there is likely to be greater scrutiny of the potential impact of air pollution on similar deaths.

Sally and Natalie will discuss:

  • The inquest into the death of Ella Kissi-Debrah

  • The coronial process

  • The recent case of R v Maughan

  • Statutory responsibilities.

You will gain an overview of the facts and conclusion in the inquest into the death of Ella Kissi-Debrah, learn more about the inquest process and recent case law and gain an understanding of the current statutory responsibilities and potential changes in the law.
