Expert profile - “Learning all the time is the real appeal.”

Friday 7 May 2021

Ashley Easen, Director of Risk Consulting at Gallagher Bassett International Ltd and Risk Management Partners provides an insight into her experience, specialism and what’s on the horizon in the sector.

Since 2016 I have led the Risk Consulting Division at Gallagher Bassett International Ltd. As part of this role my team deliver the risk control service on behalf of Risk Management Partners. We provide risk management, health & safety, and fleet risk management services across a range of industry sectors, with a specialist focus on the public sector.

What is your expertise, specialism or main area of interest?

My area is risk management. This is the discipline I qualified in and over the last 20 years has been the dominant element of every role I have held. As my career has progressed the net has widened and I have held responsibility for in-house claims management teams, insurance departments, health & safety teams, business continuity management and emergency planning units. All of these have broadened my knowledge of risk and safety related roles and services, and I still apply that learning today.

I am always keen to take on new challenges. The risk landscape for our clients is constantly changing and when they turn to us for support, advice and guidance we are ready and able to help.

Is there a particular aspect of your work you are interested in or passionate about?

The public sector holds a special place in my heart. Much of my career has been spent working within large councils, striving to embed a positive risk management culture, reduce accidents and claims, and make everyone as passionate about risk management as I am! I have had some success over the years but it’s fair to say it’s not always been easy. These are large complex organisations which in many cases operate as individual businesses within a large group structure.

The variety of work activities and projects to get involved with is endless and constantly takes you outside of your comfort zone. Learning all the time is the real appeal.

What are you working on currently?

At the moment I am preparing to deliver a webinar focused on the next wave of issues arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. These include the return to work and the vaccination programme and what this means for our clients. I am also developing a risk management masterclass training programme. The public sector is awash with new risk leaders coming through, and I am eager to support them in upskilling in all aspects of risk management to equip them with the tools they need to become leaders in their field.

What topics and trends are emerging?

E-Scooters are here to stay and vehicle autonomy is becoming a reality. Both of these will present significant challenges for our highways and police clients to navigate over the coming years. I am excited to be part of that learning journey.

I also believe the way we work will change. A lasting impact from the COVID-19 pandemic is inevitable. Many who have worked from home throughout 2020 will want to continue working in this way. This will undoubtedly impact our high streets with reduced capacity in offices resulting in a drop in footfall within our town centres. Councils and communities will need to work to address this risk and mitigate the demise of the high street.
