In this week's Meet the Member we speak to Corrina Young, Risk & Technical Officer at London Borough of Waltham Forest Council and member of the ALARM South East Branch Committee.

What is your role and what are your main responsibilities?

I am the Risk & Technical Officer for London Borough of Waltham Forest Council. My role is to embed risk management throughout the Council. I am responsible for developing and implementing the Council's risk management framework including:

  • Designing the strategy and policy
  • Recruiting and training risk champions
  • Facilitating risk workshops to identify and analyse strategic and operational risks
  • Development and maintenance of our risk management system
  • Reporting and communicating risks to a variety of audiences, including the Audit & Governance Committee and the Board.

How long have you been an ALARM member?

I have been a member of ALARM since joining the Risk & Insurance Team in November 2014, taking on this new role I found the support from ALARM through the website, training and events invaluable.

How long have you been an ALARM committee member?

I joined the South East Committee in December 2017.

What made you want to join the South East committee?

The Committee were looking for members with risk management expertise. I felt that through the professional status I had gained it was a great opportunity to share my knowledge. I also wanted to play a key role in the delivery of South East events and help build my network.

What is involved in being a committee member?

We meet regularly to plan the events. This includes debating and agreeing appropriate themes, identifying relevant speakers, planning the day including timings and venues.  We share the responsibility for contacting and communicating with sponsors and presenters to ensure the day goes according to plan. We really do work as a team, supporting each other, led by our Chair Karen Gooch from Essex County Council.

What do you get out of being an ALARM committee member?

It’s great to be part of a team and rewarding when the whole day comes together and we receive positive feedback. Sharing information with other committee members also enhances my own knowledge, helping me do a better job.

What would you say to any members considering joining an ALARM committee or focus group?

It’s a fantastic way to meet other risk and insurance professionals and learn from your colleagues as well as helping members get the most from their membership.
