MY VIEW - All Change

Monday 5 August 2019

As you may have read in Chris’ recent My View post, he steps down as the Chair of ALARM today, 5 August, and I take up the reigns in leading the organisation until the next AGM in June 2020. Chris had intended to serve as Chair until December 2019, however a change in professional circumstances and the new working challenges and demand that come with a new role, means he has ended his tenure early. He will however continue as a valued Director until at least June 2020.

After serving nine years on the Board, I was due to stand down at Conference this year. However, ahead of the AGM the ALARM Board unanimously voted for me to lead the organisation once Chris stepped down.

I have gained a wealth of knowledge, insight and experience during my time on the Board, and I believe my dedication and commitment to ALARM has been demonstrated throughout my nine year service, something that was recognised when I unexpectedly received the Lifetime Membership Award at the ALARM Risk Awards this June. This commitment has led to me gaining deep and genuine respect from members, sponsors and the Board.

I intend to provide my guidance and expertise over the next eleven months, continuing in Chris’ footsteps and leading on the Board’s priorities for the coming year, which include reviewing and modernising our constitution, and strengthening succession planning to ensure we have strong and sustainable governance in the long-term.

We started our modernisation agenda with the introduction of a new website and brand, ahead of reviewing our constitution we will be updating how we refer to executive roles, starting with the Chair. In the past, we have used the terms Chairman, Chairperson and Chair to refer to the person who leads the Board and presides over meetings. During the last six years, operating without a chief executive, this role has changed significantly and is now one of leader of the Board and supervisor and adviser for the day-to-day direction of the organisation. Because of this change, we will be following other organisations who have moved away from the use of the traditional titles, and use the more modern and more inclusive title of President.

I am grateful for the opportunity to continue working with you, our members, the Board and sponsors, and I look forward to see what the next year will bring.
