Nations update - Wales

Monday 10 May 2021

It has been a tough year for all of us, and for the ALARM Wales Branch this has meant postponement of our usual seminars. The good news is that we are planning to hold our first seminar of year, Risky business, in the summer. We hope to offer a full, COVID-19 secure get together  – something we have all missed dearly.

In the meantime, we are looking for suggestions for virtual topics you would like to see delivered. If you have any pressing issues or have any recommendations for any particular speakers, do contact me at susan.ruddock@tfw.wales. I will endeavour to arrange something for us.

Don’t forget that there are virtual seminars provided by other branches of ALARM that are available to all members. Check out the events calendar for more information.

Welsh independence?

It’s been a quiet year in Wales on the legislative front. Apart from variations to COVID-19 regulations, there have no significant changes to our legislation.

However, with the Welsh Senedd Election on 6 May 2021, there may be political changes ahead. With a recent poll showing a 40% increase in support for Welsh Independence, this is certainly one to watch – especially following the Senedd’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis, which has been well received.

Under the Wales Act 2017, the Senedd is not allowed to pass legislation relating to matters ‘reserved’ to Westminster, including ‘the union of the nations of Wales and England’. This implies that any referendum relating to Welsh independence would require Westminster’s approval. However, the matter has never been tested in court, so it remains unclear whether the Senedd could hold a referendum without consent. It is certainly one to keep an eye on in the coming months.

Sue Ruddock (susan.ruddock@tfw.wales) is Corporate Risk & Insurance Manager for Transport for Wales, and Chair of the ALARM Wales Branch.
